Furuno Price Increases
31 Mar 2009
Price increases from Furuno have been signalled for sometime due to the dramatic decline of the NZD to the Japanese Yen. However, now that the current stock has filtered out to the market, the prices have now increased. The changes are significant - between 21% to 53% or more depending on specific item. The good news at the moment is that Garmin pricing remians very low but for how long is not clear. In an industry where prices have been declining for the last 4 years, this is a wake up call to anyone looking at purchasing new marine electronics. The message is don't wait for the prices to drop again. If you need equipment, work out your budget, do the research and buy now!

Garmin Takes Over Distribution in New Zealand
16 Jan 2009
Due to Garmin's growth in both the New Zealand and Australian markets, Garmin has now taken over direct distribution of all its products in New Zealand as form the 1st January 2009. This was a mutual agreement between the previous distributor, Standard Communications, and Garmin. The move brings a further drop in pricing and makes parallel importing even less viable. There is also an expansion on the product range now available in New Zealand. However, one condition of dealers who now purchase direct from Garmin is the inability to sell using online auction sites such as TradeMe. Garmin see that online auction sites degrade the brand and this was a stance they took some years ago. We have had a presence on TradeMe for over 2 years under the identity of baymarelec. Although it is cheaper to purchase directly via our website here, the use of TradeMe has proved very popular for many searching for GPS and Marine products. If you see Garmin products offered on TradeMe, they are not from an official Garmin dealer.

Garmin Announces Massive GPS Price Drops
02 Sep 2008
With Garmin due to take over distibution in New Zealand in early 2009, the first step in this transition has been to remove the analomy in current parallel imported pricing. Up until recently, a swag of one man band opportunists have been able to source product on credit cards from large US retail chains and offer these at reasonable price savings compared to genuine NZ new product. This is all about to change with the new handheld and fitness pricing just released. Now the differences between genuine NZ new and parallel imported pricing are so small as to make the risk of parallel imported not worth it.

Garmin Nuvi Voted Best Navigator - NZ Consumer
08 Apr 2008
Garmin's Nuvi 250 has been voted best overall navigator but Consumer Magazine in the April 2008 Issue. It beat higher spec models from Navman, Tomtom and Uniden. The key advantages were it's accurate maps, ease of use and inobtrusive operation. And the Nuvi 250 is Garmin's entry level model - the difference would have been even more if a higher spec version had been selected. This just confirms what we have known for sometime - Garmin is tops in GPS navigation.
